The Chula Vista Police Department plans to hire a civilian to manage its jail and two additional jail officers to transport detainees to county detention facilities.Unlike the rest of the cities in the county, Chula Vista books detainees at its jail instead of taking them to county facilities. Once booked, detainees who are unable to post bail are then transported to county jails — either by a contracted prisoner transportation company or, if the company is unavailable, sworn officers.The hiring of a full-time jail manager is part of a larger plan to free up a lieutenant who oversees the jail in addition to the Police Department’s dispatch center.As part of the larger plan, the department plans to use funds from Measure A — a tax voters approved last November — to hire a civilian to manage the dispatch center.
